Acne, Skin Conditions and Acupuncture

Is Covid-19 and the continued need to wear face masks causing you to have skin problems? It is becoming a proven fact that for a growing number of individuals, that the constant need to wear a face mask can cause “maskne” —  which is an acne caused because the mask traps dirt and oil in face pores. Continual mask wearing can also cause skin conditions such as miliaria and rosacea.

(‘Maskn’ is a play on the ‘derm-urban dictionary’ term ‘backne’ [back acne], and have been newly coined for the COVID-19 face mask era. ‘Chestne’ [chest acne] is a previous play on the infamous term ‘backne’.)

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acne and skin problems can happen when there are yin/yang (hot/cold) imbalances within the body. Different types of acne occur where the heat and damp heat accumulate into the meridians. When toxic heat enters the blood stream it can sometimes translate and lead to severe acne or cystic acne. Be sure to consider Acupuncture if you are being affected with acne or rosacea.

Traditional Chinese Medicine believes diet and acne are linked

Anyone with acne would be encouraged to avoid eating foods too rich, sweet by nature or too warming. Also foods that are deep fried, roasted or grilled are best avoided.

Emotions also affect our skin

Other than diet issues, the lack of exercise and pend up negative emotions such as rage, anxiety or sadness can cause stagnation of qi flow and lead to skin problems such as acne and rosacea. (And in the era of Covid-19, emotional issues such as anxiety or sadness are also more pronounced, and people are often getting less exercise than they might have been getting pre-Covid..)

Using Acupuncture as a way to treat acne can be highly effective. Unlike Western medicine that can suppresses acne symptoms – drugs can create side effects for some people. Acupuncture therapy delivers a safer and more lasting cure for acne. Acupuncture targets the meridian points with fine, sterile needles, restoring harmony in the body by clearing “qi” blockages or nerve channels at various parts of the body. Acupuncture treatment is often is accompanied with Chinese herbs.
