Acupuncture can help reduce the severity of chronic pain and the depression that often accompanies it.
In a number of studies it has been shown that patients who are experiencing chronic pain and are being treated with Acupuncture do better, when compared and tested against those individuals who were provided with standard medical care alone, ie, such as anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy.
Various trials involving more than 18,000 patients over the past few years who had been diagnosed with chronic pain of the neck, lower back, head and knee were studied comparing treatments that utilized Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine as compared with only standard medical care alone. Various reports from these studies/trials have shown that the addition of Acupuncture compared to standard medical care alone significantly reduced the number of headaches and migraine attacks and reduced the severity of neck and lower back pain.
Research has shown that Acupuncture reduces chronic pain
Research has also shown that Acupuncture reduced the pain and disability of osteoarthritis, as well as other chronic pain conditions, which led to patients being less reliant on anti-inflammatory tablets to control pain.
A problem with pharmaceutical medications is that they often can become addictive for the patient. When being treated with Acupuncture, the patient receives naturally released opiates/endorphins which are not addictive. Acupuncture creates a natural way for the body to treat chronic pain by reducing it.
Too often, pharmaceutical medications actually inhibit or prevent the naturally-formed opiates/endorphins from being released; thus resulting in a condition called ‘break-through pain syndrome’. As the ‘outside’ pain medication ‘wears off’ or the person becomes more tolerant of its impact on the pain, and then the pain becomes more intense and the medications become less effective. When that happens the person is inclined to increase the dosage and their usage of pharmaceutical medications, or increase the strength of them. Frequently this leads to either addiction or additional health issues from continued and increased usage. Use of the body’s natural pain relievers is much safer, and can end up being much more effective in the long run.
